How To Make A Multi-Hook Dropper Rig
Multi-hook dropper rigs are among the most popular and effective ways to get the most out of every drift while deep dropping. The materials needed to make these intricate rigs are extensive as you need specialized items to make these rigs. Be sure to buy quality materials to ensure you don’t lose fish unnecessarily.
Materials Needed
- Lights
- Hooks
- Crimps
- Glow Tubes
- Glow Beads
- Snap Swivel
- Crimping Tool
- Swivel Crimps
- Leader Material
- Ball Bearing Swivel
Crimping
When making your crimps, you want to get as close to the edges of the crimp, without going over the edge and cutting into the leader material. Over-applying pressure can also cut into the leader as well. Not enough pressure will allow the crimps to slide and in turn, tangle the rig. Take your time when making your crimps as this is the most vital part of the construction of your rig.
Making Your Rig
To start out making your dropper rig, you will need to determine the length of leader by also determining how many dropper hooks you are looking to achieve. Leader size varies from 60-300lbs., depending on your targeted species and the depth and habitat they live in. You can make single dropper rigs as well as up to five droppers on a rig. In shallow water, where you can retrieve your baits faster call for less hooks and in depths over 200 feet, you will want to make the most of every drift by adding multiple hooks to your rig. Dropper hooks will be approximately 4-6 inches long.
Once you have your length of leader determined, you can start by making the top of the rig. You will need to slide your leader through a crimp, followed by your ball bearing swivel and finished by running the leader back through the crimp and securing it to the leader. After the top is made, you can move onto your first dropper hook. You will need to slide a swivel crimp onto the leader approximately 12-18 inches from the top of the rig and secure it to the leader. Then, take your leader for your dropper hook and slide a crimp on, then slide it through the swivel and back through the crimp and secure. Next, you will slide a glow tube followed by a glow bead, then the crimp, hook and secure the crimp. Each dropper hook will be approximately 12-14 inches apart. Follow those instructions until you’ve achieved the amount of dropper hooks you’re looking for. To complete this rig, you will slide a crimp onto the leader and then your snap swivel and then run it back through the crimp and secure. The snap swivel is to attach your weight for deep dropping. If you are fishing in waters over 200 feet in depth, it is best to add a water activated LED strobe light above the rig itself.
